Safety First

Safety Guidelines

Clay shooting from a boat requires extra precautions. Follow these guidelines to ensure safe and enjoyable shooting sessions.

Important Safety Notice

ReelTrigger is designed for use with shotguns only. Always treat your firearm as if it's loaded. Never point at anything you don't intend to shoot. Follow all local, state, and federal regulations regarding firearms and clay shooting.

Required Safety Equipment

Eye Protection

shatterproof shooting glasses or goggles. Protects eyes from clay fragments, wadding, and debris.

Hearing Protection

earplugs or earmuffs with 25+ NRR rating. Shotgun blasts can cause permanent hearing damage.

Personal Flotation Device (PFD)

properly fitted USCG-approved life jacket. Required by law on most boats, especially when shooting.

Boat Preparation

1

Secure your boat to a dock, mooring, or stable anchor point

2

Clear the throwing direction of all passengers and obstacles

3

Ensure everyone on board is aware you're about to shoot

4

Position ReelTrigger to throw away from the boat's bow and other people

5

Know your shotgun's effective range and pattern

6

Never shoot while the boat is in motion or engine is running

Safe Shooting Zones

Understanding safe shooting angles is critical for boat-based clay shooting. Know where to throw targets to avoid danger zones.

Safe Shooting Directions

  • Throw to the side (beam of the boat) — perpendicular to the hull
  • Throw behind you — away from the stern
  • Open water away from shores, docks, and structures
  • At least 100 yards from other boats and people
  • Away from overhanging trees or structures overhead

NEVER Shoot Toward

  • The front (bow) of your boat
  • Other passengers on your boat
  • Other boats or watercraft
  • Swimmers, divers, or people in the water
  • Shorelines, docks, or populated areas
  • Areas where you can't clearly see what's beyond the target

Pro Safety Tips

1

Start with shorter throw distances (10-20m) until you're comfortable with your shotgun's pattern.

2

Never assume the area is clear—always personally verify before shooting.

3

Keep your shotgun unloaded until you're ready to take a shot.

4

Be aware of your backstop—water may not stop all shot.

5

If unsure about wind conditions, reduce throw distance.

6

Designate a spotter to help watch for other boats or hazards.

Alcohol & Substances

  • Never handle firearms while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Designated "non-shooter" crew members should handle ReelTrigger
  • Save celebrations for after the shooting session

Weather Considerations

  • Postpone shooting during storms, lightning, or high winds
  • Strong winds affect both throw distance and shot pattern
  • Avoid shooting in glare conditions that impair visibility

Emergency Preparedness

  • Keep a first aid kit on board
  • Have emergency contact numbers readily available
  • Know the location of the nearest hospital or urgent care
